# Working with Knowledge Bases

> Create, fill, search and maintain knowledge bases with Genie

Genie builds and looks after [knowledge bases](https://docs.noxus.ai/platform/knowledge-bases/introduction.md): it creates them, adds files and websites, answers from their documents and tells you what failed and why. Every change goes through a card.

> [!NOTE]
>
> Knowledge bases in Genie are in beta and turned on per workspace. Until then, Genie says it cannot help with them yet.

## Adding knowledge

* **Files**: attach them to the chat and say which knowledge base and folder they go in. The card lists each file. A file named like one already in that folder replaces it.
* **Websites**: give the pages, how many levels of links to follow (up to 2) and, to keep them current, how often to read them again. Refreshes read the same pages again without following links.
* Files from Google Drive, OneDrive, SharePoint or ServiceNow are added with **Add knowledge** on the knowledge base.

Ingestion runs in the background. Ask Genie to tell you when it is done: it follows the run and names each file that trained or failed.

## Answering from a knowledge base

Ask a question and say which knowledge base to use. With a knowledge base open, Genie works on that one without asking. Genie answers only from what it finds and names the documents the answer came from. When the knowledge base does not cover something, it says so.

## Organising it

* **Folders**: Genie creates folders and moves documents and folders into them, creating the destination when it is missing. Documents that belong to a sync move with their source, so Genie does not move them; neither does it move anything into a synced folder or one that came from an integration.
* **The explorer on screen**: with the knowledge base open, Genie opens a folder, searches or filters by status, and selects documents (all the failed ones, say) so you can act on them from the selection bar.

## Keeping it up to date

* **Syncs**: Genie reads what keeps the knowledge base up to date, when each sync runs next and its last error, and runs a sync now.
* **Turning sync on**: for files or folders already added from Google Drive, OneDrive, SharePoint or a website, Genie turns sync on with a schedule. Uploaded files have no source to sync with.
* **Changing a sync**: Genie changes when it runs and whether a document deleted at the source is removed here too. The card shows each value before and after.
* **Stopping a sync**: its documents stay and stop updating. To remove them too, Genie deletes them next, with a card of their own.

## Keeping it healthy

* **Failed documents**: Genie lists them with the reason each failed and what to do about it, and retries one, a few or all of them.
* **Ingestion runs**: Genie reads what the recent runs ingested, left unchanged, skipped or failed.
* **Health**: Genie runs the checks the health dialog runs, names what fails and the repair each offers, and runs a repair once you approve it. Every repair asks: some rebuild the index and mark every document for ingestion again.
* **Search**: Genie changes how the knowledge base searches (the method, how many results, the keyword weight, the minimum similarity, RRF k and reranking) without ingesting anything again. Chunking and the embedding model stay on the **Advanced settings** tab.
* **Summary**: Genie regenerates the summary agents use to decide whether to search a knowledge base.

Ask which knowledge bases the workspace has to see each with its documents by status.

## Deleting

Genie deletes documents and folders by path, or a whole knowledge base. The card names each document or folder, and for a knowledge base how many documents go with it; a folder goes with everything in it. Neither can be undone, so Genie always asks.

## Examples

* "Create a knowledge base called Employee Handbook for our HR policies."
* "Add these files to the Policies folder." (with files attached)
* "Add docs.noxus.ai, two levels deep, and refresh it every Monday."
* "Which documents failed here, and why? Retry them."
* "What is synced into this knowledge base? Run the website sync now."
* "Move expenses.md and travel.pdf into a new Finance folder."
* "Sync the Contracts folder from Drive every day at 6, and remove what is deleted there."
* "Use hybrid search with reranking and return 8 results."
* "Is this knowledge base healthy? Fix what you can."
